ACTUS: distilleries vote SPARTAN

Challenges

SPARTAN LED luminaires have been chosen to illuminate emblematic distilleries from around the world. Often open to the public for organized tours of many distilleries are frequently faced with the dual requirement of increased safety and aesthetics of installation.

Classification of hazardous areas

Different levels of explosion protection are required on site. The production of alcohol and the vapor it releases make the main distillation zones around the stills classified zone 1.

At the same time, steam is also generally present (although to a lesser extent) in barrel storage areas, where spirits (whisky, rum, Gin, Vodka...) are stored and allowed to age; this space is generally defined as zone 2.

Finally, lighting is also needed for the grain warehouse, where grain dust (also a risk of explosion) presents. This hazardous area is designated Area 21.

All luminaires installed on site shall conform to the classification of each area.

The SPARTAN solution

All SPARTAN LED luminaires are available in Zone 1/21 or Zone 2/22 certified versions and comply with the requirements for explosion risk zones (ATEX zone). The fact that all SPARTAN products are designed, manufactured and certified in the UK also provides distilleries with greater assurance of product quality. Moreover, unlike some manufacturers who certify Zone 2 equipment themselves, all Spartan Zone 2 products are tested by third parties.

Emergency reliability

To maintain production while opening the distillery to the public, a reliable lighting solution was essential. Any unexpected breakdown could cause significant production problems and could also affect distillery visits that are booked long in advance. The distance from the distillery also makes it more difficult to obtain spare parts.

Public access during visits leads to stricter safety criteria for emergency lighting. It is therefore recommended that emergency lighting be provided in the event of a power failure, and that exit panels be installed to illuminate the visitor evacuation routes.

The SPARTAN solution

The LEDs naturally offer a longer life with less maintenance and are therefore a natural choice for lighting more and more distilleries. However, this life can only be achieved when LEDs have good thermal management and are kept fresh. The SPARTAN LED luminaires are all designed with a customized marine-grade aluminum housing (good heat conductor) and use a special thermal management design to evacuate the heat of LEDs, keep them cool and maximize service life and reliability. The fact that all SPARTAN luminaires are provided with a 5-year warranty also offers peace of mind operators.

With state-of-the-art emergency performance, SPARTAN luminaires provide the required emergency performance. With a light flux of 25% for 3 hours under emergency conditions (and up to 100% if necessary), higher efficiency than other luminaires on the market, the lux levels required can be achieved by using fewer emergency luminaires, thus reducing the overall cost of installation.

Esthetics

In addition to being often fully functional, distilleries also serve as a showcase for the spirits they produce. The impressive copper stills and cellars are a remarkable feature, but the choice of lighting is also important to contribute to the general aspect. Lighting with a warmer colour temperature creates a more attractive result. It is also often appreciated to customize the physical appearance of luminaires to match the rest of the distillery.

The SPARTAN solution

Thanks to the SPARTAN range, we offer custom luminaires that match the aesthetics of distilleries. As a standard, most SPARTAN products are supplied with 6000K LEDs, but it is possible to offer products using 4000K LEDs to give the installation a warmer effect. In addition, depending on the colours of the walls, ceilings and equipment, it is possible to paint the luminaires so that they match and melt in the rest of the building. These answers make the SPARTAN solution ideal, both in the quality of lighting and in the physical aspect of the installation.

Which products?

The SPARTAN Linear WL zone 1 are mainly used to illuminate general areas between spirits tanks and cereal hoppers, providing high performance white light lighting. This is essential in all corridor areas for the safety of workers and the general public. A variant of linear WL zone 2 may also be used in the barrel storage area; as zone 1, zone 2 and industrial WL SPARTAN linear are based on the same overall design, this means that the appearance of luminaires in different areas remains consistent throughout the distillery, thus improving the general appearance.

SPARTAN series projectors FL12 or FL24 are recommended to be mounted in the pagodas to improve lighting around the alambic with a higher level. This allows visitors to enter the enclosure and look down without their view being blocked by one of the lights. The high power of the projectors also allows the stills to be bathed in light, thus immediately capturing the visitor's attention. Also installed in the grain attices of some distilleries, the double gas (zone 1) and dust (zone 21) certification of the projectors makes it the perfect product for this application.

Appliances SPARTAN series BL are they used to highlight emergency exit routes in the event of an incident. Thanks to their compact design and the backup batteries integrated into the unit housing, the BL application is an excellent response for over doors and site exits.

In summary

The ability to meet all the requirements of safety and performance, but also to be flexible to offer a tailor-made solution, contributes greatly to the distillery's decision to choose these SPARTAN luminaires. In addition, the distilleries we had the pleasure of equipping have helped to make SPARTAN the reference lighting solution for a large number of other distillery projects in France and the DOM-TOM, especially in Martinique.
